Birth Doula FAQs

  • A doula is a professional who provides physical support, emotional support and educational guidance through your birth. A midwife is the equivalent to your obstetrician. They are trained to provide medical support through procedures or interventions and are in charge of the medical well-being of both Mom and baby. A doula is there for you and your partner and doesn’t perform any medical procedures.

  • Your doula meets with you 1-2 times during your pregnancy to answer your questions, get to know you and learn how they can support you best during labour. When you are in labour, your doula comes to you and provides continuous emotional, physical and educational support for you and your partner based on your wishes. Your doula will stay for an hour or two after birth to chat with you about your birth experience, answer questions related to feeding and provide any further resources of information you might need. Your doula will then follow up with you postpartum and once you’ve headed home to settle in.

  • Your doula will not speak on your behalf to your healthcare providers. We work on the skills you need to make informed decisions and to advocate for yourself and your partner. We are happy to help you thoroughly understand your options and give you up to date evidence-based information. We chat through pros and cons to your specific situation so you can feel confident in your decisions

  • Doulas are sometimes allowed in the OR to support our clients typically if their spouse is not available. Deciding on a c-section birth still can come with questions and critical thinking. As your doula we can help guide you in understanding what to expect for your c-section and help you stay calm in a sometimes emergent situation. If we are not allowed into the OR, we will meet you in recovery and continue to provide support to you and your partner.

  • This is the best part about working with a team approach! We have 3 Birth Doula’s on our team so that you can feel confident knowing a back-up Doula will be available to you if your primary Doula can’t get there in a timely manner. As Birth Doula’s we do everything in our power to be available during your on-call period to ensure we are there to support you!

 Postpartum Doula FAQs

  • Once you’ve decided on a package that works best for your family, we discuss with you what times/days of the week would be the most helpful for your household. You are able to divide up your hours to suit your individual needs. For example, some families enjoy having support every day for 3 hours a day whereas another may benefit from twice a week for 6 hours a day. Our only requirement is a minimum shift of 3 hours for our Doulas.

  • It’s so amazing to have friends and family for support! The difference is that your Doula can offer unbiased and current evidence-based information for the questions and concerns you may have. Your Doula is strictly there to support YOU and doesn’t bring along any judgement or personal biases! Your Doula is also not a guest and never requires being hosted or entertained which can sometimes feel tiring in the early days!

  • During overnight shifts we keep baby close to us so you can sleep soundly knowing we are watching over your little one. When baby is hungry, we bring them to you for a feeding and can grab you a snack, drink and provide a diaper change or anything you need during that feeding. You return to sleep and we return to caring for you little one. If baby is sleeping soundly, we buzz around your house taking care of little tasks quietly and efficiently to make the next day easier for everyone!

Reminder: Overnight shifts require an additional cost to your package

  • Your Doula is educated and experienced in feeding techniques, postpartum recovery and baby care. they are there to help answer your questions and guide you through this learning process. They can provide helpful resources or referrals if needed.

    • Kitchen duties (prepping, cooking, cleaning)

    • Laundry

    • Light Housekeeping

    • Helping with Siblings

    • Help with Pets (based on the comfort of the Doula)
